Singapore YOG Commemorative Coins



For those interested to lay their hands on a Singapore YOG keepsake, you can consider the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Commemorative Coins that has been launched by the Monetary Authority of Singapore on 29 June 2010.

Singapore, 29 June 2010

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) today launched the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (Singapore 2010) Commemorative Coins.

Coin Design

2 The $2 Bi-Metal Brilliant Uncirculated Coin features the striking symbol of the Singapore 2010 emblem on the Aluminium-Bronze core. Two youthful Singapore 2010 mascots, Lyo and Merly, and the distinctive Olympic rings are also featured in vibrant colours.

3 The $5 Silver Proof-Like Coin features the symbol of the Singapore 2010 emblem and the Olympic rings at the centre flanked by two mascots in vibrant colours. On the lower circumference is a crescent-shaped hologram featuring repeated patterns of the iconic Singapore lion head. The coin will be sold by itself or in a set framed by four pieces of medallions in coloured finish that feature sport pictograms with local orchids at the rim.

4 The $10 Gold Proof-Like Coin features the symbol of the Singapore 2010 emblem and the Olympic rings, which are encircled by spiralling fire and water imagery of the Singapore 2010.

5 The obverse of the coins bears the Singapore Arms with the year-date 2010.


Limited Worldwide Mintage

6 The coins will be issued on Tuesday 29 June 2010. The details of the coins are:

b. $10 Gold Proof-Like Coin - 1/4oz of 999.9 gold. Mintage of 5,000 pieces.

c. $5 Silver Proof-Like Coin - 1oz of 999 fine silver with hologram effect. Mintage of 10,000 pieces.

d. $2 Bi-Metal Brilliant Uncirculated Coin - Brilliant uncirculated condition. Mintage of 30,000 pieces.

YOG Football Team Draw Results

With the World Cup 2010 just days away, let me whet your appetite for soccer with football-related news. No it's not footballing news about England, Spain or Brazil or any of the other football powerhouses involved in the 2010 World Cup. It is news on football from the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games that will be held in August 2010.

As a result of a decision by the IOC and Singapore YOG, the Youth Olympic Games football finals will see youngsters from countries outside the traditional soccer nations playing in Singapore.

That is why you will see countries like Singapore (SIN), Bolivia (BOL), Montenegro (MNE),  Vanuatu (VAN), Zimbabwe (ZIM) and a team from Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) playing in the Youth Olympic Games men football finals.

As a unique feature at the Singapore Youth Olympic Games football finals, all women teams from Chile (CHI), Equatorial Guinea (GEQ), Papua New Guinea (PNG), Iran (IRI), Trinidad and Tobago (TRI), and Turkey (TUR)will also be represented in the soccer finals.
 
The results of the YOG football team draw results were released on 18 May 2010.

The Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC) and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) announced the Football team draw results for the first-ever Youth Olympic Games (YOG).

The YOG Football competition will comprise Men and Women football team events.

The six football teams per event will be divided into two groups of three for the preliminaries. Each football team will play every other team in the group once.

Women's Event

Chile (CHI), Equatorial Guinea (GEQ), Papua New Guinea (PNG), Iran (IRI), Trinidad and Tobago (TRI), and Turkey (TUR) will compete in the Women’s event.

Group A
A1= TUR
A2= IRI
A3= PNG

Group B
B1= CHI
B2= TRI
B3= GEQ

Men's Event

Bolivia (BOL), Montenegro (MNE), Singapore (SIN), Vanuatu (VAN), Zimbabwe (ZIM) and a team from Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) will compete in the Men’s event.

Group C
C1= VAN
C2= BOL
C3= CONCACAF

Group D
D1= SIN
D2= ZIM
D3= MNE

In conducting the draw, the Guest of Honour - Mr Kwek Leng Joo, Board Member and Chairman of the Marketing Advisory Committee of SYOGOC, picked out the team names and Mr Lim Kia Tong, Vice President of Football Association of Singapore (FAS) picked out the corresponding team grouping.

Mr John Schmacher, Manager of Olympics and Youth Events, FIFA presided over the draw. The ceremony was also witnessed by officials from FIFA, SYOGOC and the participating National Federations.

The first match of the Singapore 2010 Football competition will take place on 12 August 2010 at 6pm between the Women’s Football teams of Turkey and Iran.
