Youth Games Olympic Will Have Anti-Doping Education

Blood testing as part of anti-doping education and anti-doping measures may be applied during next year's Olympic Games Youths in Singapore to weed out drug cheats.

The organisers of the world's first Olympic Games for Youth for young athletes between the ages of 14 to 18 will work with the International Olympic Committee to determine whether such blood testing will be used for anti-doping control and education.

The organisers want to send a clear message to young athletes of the world that they want to prevent youths from using dope to cheat during the games and to protect those youngsters who do not abuse drugs.

Mr Rob Koehler, Director of Education and Programme Development for the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada), raised this possibility of anti-doping blood tests to detect unnaturally high levels of erythropoietin (EPO) in athletes.

He also added that Singapore was taking the right approach to anti-doping measures by putting focus on prevention through anti-doping education.

50 local volunteers training to be Doping Control Officers will attend a four-day training course by officers from the Japan Anti-Doping Agency as part of doping control preparations for the Olympic Games for Youth in 2010.

These anti-doping measures and activities were announced in The Sunday Times on 15 February 2009.
