Yip Pin Xiu Wins Paralympic Gold Medal In Swimming

Yip Pin Xiu has done what no other athlete or swimmer from Singapore has done in the Paralympic or Olympic Games – win the Paralympic Gold Medal.

Yip Pin Xiu beat a field of top class swimmers in the 50 metres backstroke on 15 September 2008 at the Beijing Paralympic Games to become a Paralympic champion and win a Paralympic Gold Medal for Singapore and herself.

16 year-old Yip Pin Xiu, coached by Ang Peng Siong, touched the wall at the end of her 50-metre backstroke swimming event in 58.75 seconds. Earlier in the morning, Yip Pin Xiu set a Paralympic world record in the same 50-metre backstroke swimming event in a time of 57.92 seconds.

Yip Pin Xiu's achievement was stunning considering that she was nursing a sorethroat before the Paralympic Gold medal win. Her win ensured that Singapore's national anthem was played at the Paralympic Games for the first time.

This is the second medal of the 13th Paralympic Games for Yip Pin Xiu after her silver medal win in the 50m freestyle (S3) on Saturday.

Yip Pin Xiu was quoted by to be grateful for all the help from the Singapore Disability Sports Council and the Singapore National Paralympic Council (SNPC), and reserved special praise for coach Ang, team-mate Theresa Goh, and her parents, dad Yip Chee Khiong and mum Margaret Chong.

Under the Singapore National Paralympic Council Achievement Awards scheme, Pin Xiu will receive $100,000 for her gold medal.

Congratulations Yip Pin Xiu! Singapore is proud of your fantastic gold medal achievement in swimming at the Paralympic Games!

Yip Pin Xiu Wins Paralympic Silver Medal In Swimming

Yip Pin Xiu has done Singapore proud by winning a Paralympic silver medal at the Paralympic Games in a swimming competition. This is Singapore's very first silver medal won at the Paralympic Games, in swimming or any other Paralympic event.

Her mighty Paralympic silver medal win and achievement in the women's 50-metre freestyle in the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games came after she touched home in a time of 57.43 seconds to earn a Paralympic Games silver medal in the swimming competition.

While she had set a Paralympic world record at the swimming heats earlier in the Paralympic Games in a time of 57.04 seconds, she was not able to reproduce that burst of speed to beat the time of 57.05 seconds set by Paralympic gold medal winner, Mexico's Patricia Valle.

Community Development, Youth and Sports Minister Vivian Balakrishnan was there to witness the historic Beijing 2008 Paralympic swimming event. He presented not medals but flowers for her Paralympic Swimming Games event later that day.

In gratitude to the efforts shown by her trainer and coach, Yip Pin Xiu presented the Paralympic silver medal to her coach from Singapore, Ang Peng Siong. She was quoted to have said, "Happy, because it is the first silver for the Paralympics, for the swimming," when asked how she felt about her Paralympic Games win.

This stupendous Paralympic silver medal win by Singaporean swimmer Yip Pin Xiu is a historic moment for Singapore. Such a great Paralympic Games achievement deserves the greatest accolade from all Singaporeans.

We are proud of you! Keep up the fantastic work and win more Paralympic gold, silver or bronze medals for yourself and Singapore in the future!

Likes - People with a sense of humour, having a good laugh and traveling

Dislikes - Very spicy food! ]
