Sports Presenters: Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games

On 23 October 2009, Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games introduced 120 youths aged between 13 and 29 to the public as youth sports presenters by Mr Teo Ser Luck, Senior Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports, and Transport.

The job scope of youth sports presenters of the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games includes stints at competition venues as announcers, commentators, hosts and mascot talent to enliven spectators’ experience during the Games.

Ten training sessions were organised by the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC) from December 2008 to March 2009. An estimated 500 youths attended. This group of sports presenters wannabes was withered down to the final 120. Criteria like overall presentation skills, vocal quality and personality were used to assess the group.

Why did these youths want to become sports presenters of the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games? In the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games official site, it was reported that Miss Cleo Chew, 16, chosen to be a presenter for gymnastics and volleyball, was attracted to the first YOG because "it is quite cool to be part of history. This is a first for me, to be able to interact with international youth athletes and huge crowds. I’ve learnt how to handle spontaneous situations and pressure during competitions."

From now till the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games in August 2010, these sports presenters will continue to have opportunities to present at various sporting events.
