Team Singapore will be sending 90 members to the first Asian Youth Games 2009 to be held in Singapore from 29 June to 7 July 2009.

During the official Flag Presentation Ceremony held at the Raffles Institution on 2 June 2009, Guest-of-Honour Mr Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Defence and President of the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC), presented the flag to Singapore's official flag-bearer for the Asian Youth Games 2009, swimmer Quah Ting Wen. Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports witnessed the ceremony.

"It is a timely and significant opportunity for our young athletes who will now be benchmarked against their peers from the 44 other Asian countries on one big platform and while winning medals is every athlete's aspiration, I would be happy if every athlete performed to their best even if he or she were to finish without a medal.

The AYG will also serve as a useful and timely test of our National Sports Associations' talent identification and youth development programs," commented Mr Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence and President of the Singapore National Olympic Council.

Mr Lee Wung Yew, Olympian and national shooter, will lead Team Singapore as Chef-de-Mission for the Asian Youth Games 2009.

Mr Lee commented, "This is a very exciting time for our young athletes as they prepare to compete in the inaugural Asian Youth Games. This is an exceptional opportunity for them to not only be a part of this historic event, but to compete on our very own shores, with the support from the home crowd.

I am confident that our young athletes will give their utmost at the Asian Youth Games and fly our Singapore flag high at the Games."

Our Team Singapore will compete in nine sport disciplines at the inaugural Asian Youth Games - Athletics, FIBA 33 Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Bowling, Football, Sailing, Shooting, Swimming and Table Tennis.

Good luck to Team Singapore at the Asian Youth Games 2009.
