Istana Honour For Olympic, Paralympic: Team Singapore
In a historic gesture, the Singapore Olympic and Paralympic teams were given the honour of an Istana reception by President S R Nathan on 20 September 2008.
More than 60 athletes and officials met President S R Nathan, Mrs Nathan and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at Sri Temasek within the Istana compound. In the hour-long reception, the Olympic and Paralympic team members chatted with VIPs and guests about their Olympic and Paralympic Games experiences.
According to The Sunday Times, President Nathan was quoted:
"We are proud of their achievements. Some of them have done well. Some others may not have secured medals, but they have done well by recording their personal or national bests. This is the beginning of a new journey. And I hope, with our encouragement and support, future generations of Olympians will do us more proud."
This is indeed an honour, given by the President of Singapore, to all those Team Singapore members who worked hard for their Olympic and Paralympic achievements.
We hope that more Singaporeans will be spurred to take up sports and raise their standards to Olympic and Paralympic levels.

Yip Pin Xiu Wins Paralympic Silver Medal In Swimming
Yip Pin Xiu has done Singapore proud by winning a Paralympic silver medal at the Paralympic Games in a swimming competition. This is Singapore's very first silver medal won at the Paralympic Games, in swimming or any other Paralympic event.
Her mighty Paralympic silver medal win and achievement in the women's 50-metre freestyle in the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games came after she touched home in a time of 57.43 seconds to earn a Paralympic Games silver medal in the swimming competition.
While she had set a Paralympic world record at the swimming heats earlier in the Paralympic Games in a time of 57.04 seconds, she was not able to reproduce that burst of speed to beat the time of 57.05 seconds set by Paralympic gold medal winner, Mexico's Patricia Valle.
Community Development, Youth and Sports Minister Vivian Balakrishnan was there to witness the historic Beijing 2008 Paralympic swimming event. He presented not medals but flowers for her Paralympic Swimming Games event later that day.
In gratitude to the efforts shown by her trainer and coach, Yip Pin Xiu presented the Paralympic silver medal to her coach from Singapore, Ang Peng Siong. Feng Tianwei Wins Women World Cup Table Tennis 2008
Source: Channel News Asia http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sportsnews/view/374654/1/.html
In the Women World Cup table tennis 2008 competition held in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore's Feng Tianwei beat compatriot Wang Yuegu to claim the bronze medal.
In the earlier semi-final clash, Feng Tianwei was defeated by Hong Kong's Tie Yana 11—6, 13—11, 11—8 and 11—7. Feng Tianwei, winner of the silver medal in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, was unable to reproduce her great form during an earlier table tennis win over China's and the World's second seeded table tennis player Guo Ye.
During the third and fourth placing play-off in the Women World Cup table tennis competition, Feng Tianwei mustered a 11—8, 11—9, 11—7 and 11—8 victory over her team mate from Singaproe.
The recent ban on the use of speed glue in table tennis has affected all the table tennis players. But it seems like Feng Tianwei has managed to cope better than others. Hopefully as she gets used to playing with the new table tennis bat, and after shaking off the celebrations from her recent Beijing Olympic Games, she will continue to march on.
Congratulations to Feng Tianwei on her bronze medal win in the Women World Cup table tennis competition!
