Catch Olympians and world-beaters in swimming at the FINA Swimming World Cup 2008 in Singapore from 1 November to 2 November 2008. Beijing Olympic gold medallist Oussama Mellouli will be here, as well as world-class competitors like Tara Kirk, Randall Bal and Therese Alshammar to compete at the only Asian city in this season's 7-city world tour.

Asian Beach Games (ABG) 2008 Final Medal Tally

Singapore has won three medals at the inaugural Asian Beach Games 2008 held in Bali, Indonesia.

Here is the medal tally of one Gold and two Silvers by our Singaporean athletes. Ng Yeow Gim (Gold, Woodball Men's Singles), Muhammad Razif Bin Mokhlas (Bronze, Pencek Silat Men's Tanding Class H) and Saiedah Bte Said (Bronze, Pencak Silat Women's Tanding Class D).

Singapore Wins Asian Beach Games Silat Tanding Men Bronze Medal

Mohamed Razif Moklas from Singapore won the bronze medal in the beach Pencak Silat Tanding Class H (Men) on 18 October 2008 at the first Asian Beach Games in Bali, Indonesia.

Mohamed Razif Moklas scored a close 3:2 result to beat Pranoto Pranoto of Indonesia to take home a hard fought bronze medal.

Singapore Wins Beach Pencak Silat Tanding Women Bronze Medal

Singapore's Saiedah Said beat Le Thi Hong Ngoan of Vietnam in the Beach Pencak Silat Tanding Class D (Women) to clinch the bronze medal for Singapore on 19 October 2008.

Saiedah Said scored a convincing 5 to 0 result to ensure she came home with the Asian Beach Games bronze medal.

First Gold Medal at Asian Beach Games 2008

Ng Yeow Gim became the first Singaporean athlete to win a Gold Medal for Singapore at the first Asian Beach Games 2008. Ng Yeow Gim scored 119 final strikes to take the Gold Medal in Woodball Men's Final in Nusa Dua, Bali on 22 October 2008. His total score of 451 in Woodball Men's Final was achieved in a well-played game at the finals of the Asian Beach Games.

The Woodball Men's Team however was not able to capitalise on his consistent good scores to bring home any medal during the team event held earlier.

Congratulations to Ng Yeow Gim for blazing the trail for Singapore at the first ever Asian Beach Games 2008!

Mascot of Singapore Olympic Youth Games (YOG)

A reader of Singapore Olympic Youth Games blog asked me what's the mascot of the 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG). All hosts of Olympics Games in the past have traditionally designed and produced a mascot to rally all athletes, officials, supporters and well wishers for their hosting of the Olympic Games. For the first Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) to be held in Singapore, there will certainly be a mascot or two.

As of today, however, there is no news yet on Singapore's Mascot for the world's first Youth Olympic Games (YOG). I am confident that it will be unveiled later in a grand ceremony to annouce this mascot's arrival.

I shall post the name, image, picture or photograph of the YOG mascot, once the official Youth Olympic Games website announces this piece of news. In the meantime, keep reading Singapore Olympic Youth Games blog to keep up to date.

Great Performance by Singapore Youths at Commonwealth Youth Games 2008.

Singapore has done well at the 3rd Commonwealth Youth Games 2008 in Pune, India from 12 October to 18 October 2008.

Singapore is twelve on the list of countries that have won medals at the CYG 2008.

Singapore won 2 Gold medals, 5 Silver medals and 4 Bronze medals for a total haul of eleven (11) medals.

Commonwealth Youth Games CYG 2008 Swimming Winners

More Singapore swimmers became medal winners at the recent Commonwealth Youth Games CYG 2008 held in PUNE, INDIA.

Roanne Ho won the Silver medal in the Women's 50m breaststroke finals in a time of 33.34 seconds, just .43 second behind the eventual winner.

Shana Lim won the Bronze medal in the Women's 50m backstroke finals in a time of 29.85 seconds to come in third.

Rainer Ng took the Bronze medal in the Men's 50m backstroke finals in a time of 26.96 seconds.

Singapore Wins CYG Women's Table Tennis Gold, Silver Medals

Singaporean Isabelle Li won the Commonwealth Youth Games CYG Gold medal for women's table tennis on 16 October 2008, while Singaporean Zena Sim Kai Xin won the Silver medal.

Isabelle Li defeated Zena Sim Kai Xin in an all-Singapore CYG Women's table tennis finals 11-6, 9-11, 11-3, 11-7, 8-11 and 11-1 in a best of seven game match.

This fantastic performance by the two top Singapore Youth table tennis players at the Commonwealth Youth Games bodes well for the future of women's table tennis, especially for the Youth Olympic games to be held in Singapore in 2010.

2011 Youth Games Isle of Man: School Girl Requests For Contact

I recently received a request from a reader who is the father of an 8 year-old girl who lives on the Isle of Man. Her daughter would like to make contact with peers from Singapore to do a class project comparing school childrens' living in Singapore and on the Isle of Man. Team Singapore women’s table tennis coach Liu Guodong was reported to have rejected a new two-year contract by the Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA).

His last day with the Olympic silver-medal winning women’s team will be on 31 December 2008.

With this turn of event, will his protégé and star player like Feng Tianwei leave as a result? Presently, all the women table tennis players were quoted to have said they would stay.

Presumably, they will be anxious to know who will take over the role as their new table tennis coach, before make any hasty decisions.

According to a report in Today newspaper, STTA chief executive officer Chew Soo Sheng allayed fears that Wang Yuegu, Feng Tianwei and Li will no longer play as a unit for Singapore.

Chew, who assumed the post on October 8, said: “They have all indicated that they will continue representing Singapore and, to the best of my knowledge, there has been no negative reaction to the news (of Liu rejecting a new deal).

“I spoke to Tianwei (on Monday), informing her of Liu’s decision to turn down the new deal. She said she understood and respected his decision.

Coach Liu Guodong was involved in an unpleasant turn of event at the Beijing Olympic Games when a mix-up left Singapore’s top male table tennis player, Gao Ning, without a courtside coach and his resultant collapse in 4 straight games.

The STTA are said to have drawn up a shortlist of six candidates to take over as the national women’s team coach and also looking for a men’s team coach. Local players like of Pang Xuejie and Zena Sim (both from the Singapore Sports School) may also be promoted to beef up the women’s table tennis team.

Let’s hope the core players stay on, supplemented with new talents and coaches who can bring Singapore’s table tennis to greater heights of success.

CYG PUNE 2008: Air Rifle 60 Metres Silver medal Win

Wan Tian Chong has shot his way to a silver medal in the Air Rifle 60-metre event at the 3rd edition of the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG Pune 2008) held in Pune, India.

Wan Tian Chong was placed second for a silver medal after Huckle James of England.

CYG 2008 Results: Singapore Wins Silver Medal In Men's 50-metre Breaststroke Swimming Finals

Singaporean youth Ng Jia Hao became the first Singaporean swimmer to win a medal at the 3rd Commonwealth Youth Games CYG held at the National Aquatics Centre in Pune, India on 15 October 2008.

Ng Jia Hao touched home in the men's 50 metre breaststroke swimming event in a time of 29.70 seconds. This was exactly the same timing as Karsten Warren Scott from RSA! But according to the official CYG results page, he is listed as bronze medal winner!? Is there a mistake? Double check official results page of CYG PUNE 2008 website. (Source = CYG Pune 2008)

Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) 2008 Bronze Medal Win By Women Doubles Table Tennis

Isabelle Li and Zena Sim Kai Xin won a bronze medal in Women's Doubles Table Tennis at the Third Commonwealth Youth Games in Pune on Wednesday 15 October 2008.

Isabelle Li and Zena Sim Kai Xin did Singapore proud when they beat Karina le Fevre and Natalie Slater of England 11-6, 11-8 and 11-7 in straight sets to take the bronze in 3 sets to love.

Singapore has won a gold and a silver at the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) in Pune, India.

Aqilah Sudhir shot her way to the Comonwealth Youth Games (CYG) Gold medal when she won Singapore's first medal in the Women's 10-metre Air Rifle event on 13 October 2008. She led the pack with a final score of 501 points.

Christopher John Chia Sim Chen won Singapore's second medal in the Men's 10-metre Air Pistol by with a final score of 555 points. Chia was just two points behind Canada's Matthew James Hendry who took gold with a final score of 557.

The Team Singapore Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) contingent is made up of 16 athletes aged 14 to 18 years old. They are competing for top honours in four sports - athletics, shooting, swimming and table tennis.

The III Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) began on October 12 and the athletes will be in Pune until October 18. More than 1,300 athletes with 350 officials from 71 countries are at the World's First Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) in Pune, India, participating in nine disciplines - athletics, badminton, boxing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, tennis, weightlifting and wrestling.

This is the first Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) to be held in Asia.

What is the Commonwealth Youth Games?

The Commonwealth Games Federation discussed the idea of a Millennium Commonwealth Youth Games in 1997. In 1998 the concept was agreed on for the purpose of providing a Commonwealth multi-sport event for young people.

The Commonwealth Youth Games are a mini Commonwealth Games attracting the best young athletes in the Commonwealth.

All competitors in the Commonwealth Youth Games need to be 18 years or less (i.e, their 18th birthday is during the calendar year in which the Games is held).

The CYG are held no more than once in each quadrennial and not in the year of the Commonwealth Games or Olympic Games.

Post the 2008 CYG in Pune, India the quadrennial cycle will be amended to commence in 2011 (Isle of Man).

Every Commonwealth territory is invited to participate in the Commonwealth Youth Games. The duration of the CYG is no more than seven days, including one “Host Country” Cultural Day.

The first Commonwealth Youth Games were held in Edinburgh, Scotland in August 2000 where 733 Athletes from 14 countries competed in 8 sports over 3 days.

The second edition of the Commonwealth Youth Games took place in Bendigo, Australia in December 2004 and saw over 1000 athletes and officials from 22 countries in a 10 sport programme.

The third Commonwealth Youth Games will be held in the Indian city of Pune from 12 - 18 October 2008 where 71 nations and territories will participate in 9 sports.

A decision was taken by the Commonwealth Games Federation at their General Assembly in 2005 to move the Youth Games outside of the Olympic Games year and in doing so awarded the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games to the Isle of Man.

Pune, 12th October 2008:

The rich cultural heritage of India and the great Maratha spirit came alive today, as the spectacular sporting bonanza of the Commonwealth Youth Games 2008 began in Pune. Her Excellency, Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil , President of India, declared the Games open in the presence of eminent dignitaries, famed athletes and gallaries full of sports lovers.

Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, MP & Chairman, Commonwealth Youth Games Pune 2008 and Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010 expressed his happiness that for the first time all the 71 nations were participating in Commonwealth Youth Games. He also thanked Puneties for their overwhelming support and warm welcome extended by them to the participants.

Shri. Vilasrao Deshmukh -Hon'ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Smt Rajlaxmi Bhosale -Hon'ble Mayor of Pune, Mr. Michael Fennell - President, Commonwealth Games Federation, Mr. Mike Cooper - CEO, Commonwealth Games Federation, Mr. Randhir Singh -Secreatary General, Indian Olympic Association, Dr. MS Gill, Union Minister for Sports , Dr. Shashi Tharoor - Chairman Commonwealth Games Games Council and Former UN Under Secretary General , Mr. S. Jaipal Reddy - Urban Development Minister, Mr. S.C Jamir -Hon'ble Governor of Maharashtra, were also present on the occasion.


Over 1,300 athletes and 350 officials from 71 countries are participating in 9 disciplines -Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Weightlifting and Wrestling.


The Opening Ceremony at the impressive Athletics Stadium at Balewadi Sports City on the outskirts of Pune began with welcome note by the Army band and an elegant equastrian parade by Mewar Horses.


The National Anthem was played by renowned Santoor player Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma and his son Rahul Sharma while noted dancer-actor Hema Malini performed the Ganesh Vandana.


The famed helicopter display team of the Indian Air Force 'Sarang' showcased various manoevres, which received wide applause. Thereafter the Akashganga paratroopers touched down in various formations.


The Youth Baton was carried by P T Usha, Sania Mirza, Saina Nehwal, Gopichand, Anjali Bhagwat, Dhanraj Pillai, Jitendra Kumar, Nandu Natekar, Ajit Pal Singh, Zafar Iqbal, Akhil Kumar, Sushil Kumar and Vijender among others.


Ace shooter and Olympic Gold medallist Abhinav Bindra picked up the Kalash with water from the 'Tribune of Honour' and poured the water into the Grand Kalash. The 'Fountain of Youth' then came alive in its full glory.


India's bollywood sensation and Maharashtra's very own, Urmila Matondkar enthralled audiences with the traditional Lavani performed to the enchanting beats of the dholak. While Bollywood's leading star, Saif Ali Khan regaled the audience with his performance on popular Bollywood chart busters.


The Commonwealth Youth Games at Pune are being seen as a curtain raiser for the Commonwealth Games to be hosted by India in New Delhi in 2010. The Youth Games will also serve to identify India's medal winning potential athletes for the main Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and the Olympic Games.


The most unique feature of these games is their venue, Shiv Chhatrapati Sports City at Balewadi on the outskirts of Pune, as it is for the first time that the competition venues of all disciplines and the Athletes Village will be housed in a single sports complex.


The sprawling complex is located on 153 acres of land. The mascot of the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games is "Jigrr", a young tiger cub, the national animal of India. Jigrr is the younger brother of 'Shera', the mascot of 2010 Commonwealth Games. The name "Jigrr", is an amalgam of the word "Jigar", which implies courage in Hindi and also the sound of a tiger roar 'grrr...'

How to volunteer for Singapore Youth Olympic Games SYOG

There’re two ways to become a YOG Volunteer:

(1) If you’re a student, there’re many opportunities to get involved in the YOG through your school.

For students in the ITEs, polytechnics, and universities, please ask for more details from the nice people at your student affairs office.

For students in the primary and secondary schools, and junior colleges, please bear with us a little longer. SYOGOC is working closely with the Ministry of Education to come up with exciting opportunities for you to be part of the YOG heartbeat. In-the-works are the Schools-NOC Twinning Programme where your school may get to host youths from other parts of the world, and other ways for you to be involved through your CCAs such as NCC, NPCC, photography, student presenters, and many more.

(2) If you’ve already left school, and will be at least 18 years old on 1 March 2010, we welcome you to register with us as an individual volunteer.

By understanding what’s involved in becoming a YOG Volunteer, you can tell us what you can do and like to do, and we will do our best to match you to the right volunteering opportunities.

IOC To Analyse Beijing 2008 Samples

A report published on the IOC website on the 8 October 2008 revealed that the IOC intended to further analyse samples collected during the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

Tests will be conducted on samples across all sports including the newest doping agent EPO CERA. Samples collected at the Beijing Summer Olympic Games will be kept for up to eight years. When new technological breakthroughs arrive, samples will be re-tested to check for inappropriate use of performance-enhancing substances.

The message that IOC wants to send is to put out a "strong deterrent and make athletes think twice before cheating". IOC President Jacques Rogge was quoted to have said this.

Athletes qualified for the Beijing Olympic Games were tested by the World Anti-Doping Agency and BOCOG under the authority of the IOC. As a general rule, all top five finishers, plus a further two, were tested.

Will Athletes At Singapore 2010 YOG Be Tested For Dope?

There is no apparent news about dope testing of athletes during the upcoming Singapore Youth Olympic Games YOG in the year 2010. While competitors at the Summer and Winter Olympic Games are routinely tested during the Olympic games, I have not heard anything about dope testing for athletes at the Singapore 2010 YOG.

As a matter of principle, dope testing should be carried out on athletes at international-level competitive games regardless of the age groups. There should not be any exceptions for the Singapore 2010 YOG.

We will have to monitor and see what the IOC and the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee SYOGOC have to say about this in the coming months.

SINGAPORE TO ATTEND THE 6TH WORLD FORUM ON SPORT, EDUCATION AND CULTURE IN BUSAN

Singapore, 24 September 2008 – The Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee’s Chairman, Mr Ng Ser Miang, and Director of Culture and Education Programme, Mr Lee Pak Sing, will be attending the 6th World Forum on Sport, Education and Culture in Busan (Korea) from 25 to 27 September 2008.

They will share with the 800 participants on how Singapore aims to create a unique and inspiring Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in 2010 - one that is grounded in the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect, and which will inspire youth of the world to bring about positive changes to their lives and communities through their participation in sport, culture and education.

At the panel for one of the plenary sessions (26 September), Mr Ng will discuss the topic of “Creating a sporting event with a strong education programme – Youth Olympic Games”. Mr Lee will moderate the session on “Benefiting from the Youth Olympic Games”.

Jointly organised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Metropolitan City of Busan, the Forum will bring together participants such as IOC members, Olympic Games Organising Committees, and other international organizations. It will review the culture and education work undertaken by the Olympic movement and chart future directions to further the sporting, cultural and educational mission of the Olympic movement.

The Forum will coincide with the 4th Busan TAFISA World Sport for All Games from 26 September to 2 October.

The Singapore YOG Organising Committee (SYOGOC) organized a series of seminars on Singapore YOG sponsorship opportunities for various companies.

On 18 and 19 September, two seminars were held at the Ritz-Carlton Millenia Hotel. Entrepreneurs and businessmen from more than 70 local and international companies attended. They represented diverse fields like banking and finance, property, automobiles, telecommunications, information technology and other sectors.

The reason for this YOG Games sponsorship seminar? To attract commercial partners to join the Singapore YOG on a win-win partnership to ensure success for the games.

“The Olympic rings are one of the most well-known icons, symbolising the values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect. SINGAPORE YOG 2010 LOGO DESIGN COMPETITION RECEIVED 1590 ENTRIES

At the close of the Singapore YOG 2010 Logo Design competition on 29 August 2008, 1590 entries were received by the YOGOC.

Of these 1590 Singapore YOG Logo Design Competition entries, 856 entries came from youths, while the Open category received 734 entries.

Judging by these numbers of Singapore YOG Logo Design Competition entries, this is a very credible figure. The interest in the Singapore YOG 2010 Logo Design Competition has been global as well as local.
