YOG In 2010, Facebook, Friendster and Other New Media

At the 7th Annual PR Academy Conference on Strategic Communication: Communicating in a New Media Environment held at Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel on 22 May 2008, Dr Vivian Balakishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports spoke about the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) using new media for communications.

"The upcoming Youth Olympic Games in 2010 will also see new media used extensively. It is already on Facebook and Friendster.

We also intend to create a virtual reality space, similar to 3-D virtual online world Second Life. This will enable young people from around the world to anticipate and experience Singapore and the various venues even before the YOG begins.

There will also be a digital concierge service to enable the YOG community to access personalized information and services anywhere, anytime. They will be able to do this via existing mobile phone networks, or via our widely available Wireless@SG infrastructure.

You have probably also have heard and read about the exciting virtual city project, ''Co-space'' that the Media Development Authority is spear-heading. This will also provide opportunities for people in Singapore and around the world to interact in real time at the various Singapore sites."

With such a thorough communications plan to let the world access the Youth Olympic Games, Singapore could set new standards in the use of media to allow users all over the world to share the Olympic spirit at the world's first Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in 2010.

Update On Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) Preparation

At the eleventh Parliament of Singapore, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports gave a written reply to Member of Parliament Mr Seah Kian Peng on the progress of preparations for the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) on 26 May 2008.

YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES
(Update on Progress of Preparation)

Mr Seah Kian Peng: To ask the Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports (a) whether all the key positions for the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) organising committee have been filled; and (b) if he will provide an update on the progress of the preparations to-date given that the 2010 YOG is less than two and a half years away.

Dr Vivian Balakrishnan:

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) awarded the hosting of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games to Singapore on 21 February 2008. Since then, the Singapore Youth Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC) has been set up to specifically oversee the planning and delivery of the Games over the next two years.

In March 2008, Mr Ng Ser Miang, International Olympic Committee Executive Board Member in Singapore, was appointed as Chairman of the SYOGOC Board. 21 other members from the public, private and people sectors have also been appointed to the SYOGOC Board. At the executive level, BG Goh Kee Nguan has been appointed as the CEO of SYOGOC. The other key leadership positions in SYOGOC have been identified and 6 out of the 13 senior executives are already on full time employment, with the rest joining the team later. The hiring of the core personnel required for planning and preparation is also ongoing. SYOGOC has adopted a phased approach for staffing, tapping on an initial group of core personnel to identify specific functional requirements before additional staff are brought in for operations. Besides permanent staff, SYOGOC is looking at contract services as well as volunteers to carry out its tasks. SYOGOC is also well supported by the various Ministries and government agencies in terms of officers assigned full-time to SYOGOC to help organise the Games.

The planning and preparations for the YOG are on track. Last month, a seminar with the IOC was held in Singapore for transfer of knowledge, and a detailed project schedule has been developed with clear milestones for this major endeavour. In particular, the construction of the Youth Olympic Village is on track and the schedule of upgrading works for the competition venues is also being finalised. More meetings with the International Sports Federations will be taking place to discuss the technical requirements for the different sports. We have also started development on some of the Culture and Education programmes such as the Schools-NOCs Twinning Programme and the Olympic Education package. The Ministry of Education, together with SYOGOC, will launch the Schools-NOCs Twinning Programme and the Olympic Education by the end of this year. SYOGOC will also be sending a team to observe and learn from the management of the Beijing Olympic Games.

Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) And Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull

What has Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull got to do with Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (YOG)? The short answer: three reasons and a passion. Let me explain.

I am passionate about the Olympic Movement since young and the new baby of the Olympic family, Youth Olympic Games (YOG) starting with Singapore 2010 is just an extension of that passion.

I am also passionate about the Indiana Jones trilogy as I grew up watching these movies from childhood. The next installment of the Indiana Jones franchise The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is a must see movie for a die-hard fan like me.

Athletic prowess and mastery of body movement are obvious attributes witnessed during Olympic games competitions. In a similar vein, the character of Indiana Jones is also heavily involved in sports like whip weaving and weapon shoots, while acrobatic movements are liberally employed in the movies.

The Youth Olympic Games represent the future of the Olympics. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is the future of the Indiana Jones lineage. I intend to entertain and enjoy myself during the Youth Olympic Games as well as the movie screening of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

The Youth Olympic Games will be a thrilling event for my family as I intend to introduce them to my little ones. They will get to see first hand what the Olympic Games is about. Similarly, I intend to acquaint my kids to the story of Indiana Jones. The up coming movie, Indian Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, will be the start of good things for them.

TV Beach.Ball.Babes To Show Before Singapore Youth Olympic Games (YOG)

c.c. Image via flickr

Source: CNA
http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/entertainment/view/347616/1/.html

Singapore’s MediaCorp TV Channel 8 plans to showcase Beach.Ball.Babes, a sports-related drama before the Beijing Olympic Games commences. Slated for release on 7 July 2008, this show will pave the way for other sports-themed drama shows in the pipeline to be screened before the Youth Olympic Games (YOG).

The 20-episode drama show will feature a young cast of female leads from MediaCorp’s stable of good-looking actresses, perfecting their art of beach volleyball acting, in bikinis at the beach of course. What is surprising is the indecent plan to show a shopping scene at the Tiong Bahru wet market, with the cast rubbing shoulders with heartland aunties in their bikinis (the cast, not the aunties).

The TV station’s Senior Vice President for Chinese Drama Production was quoted as saying: ”This is a family-friendly channel. How much skin-baring can there be?”

The executive producer was also quoted as saying: “Singaporeans are very open-minded nowadays.”

With the internationally popular Sex And The City TV series and now a London movie premiere playing to great reception, is it any surprise to hear of a uniquely Singaporean show that bares some skin?

It could be a gimmick. Or purely hogwash. Let’s withhold judgment until the show has been exposed on air in July.

What I Hope And Expect In The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games Soccer Finals

This is the kind of pulsating game that I would wish to witness during the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games Soccer Finals. I hope to see plenty of goals scored in a thrilling match between the best Olympic teams under age 18. The soccer tournament would be for youths between 14 and 18 years old to come together in the spirit of Olympism, to excel in their respective sporting games.

Watch this exciting Under 17 Fifa World Cup Soccer Finals held in 2005. The match between Mexico and Brazil was played out in Peru. These kids are under 17 years old and may be what you can expect in a Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games Soccer competition to be held in August in Singapore.

Sixteen Year Old Vicky Parnov Won The 5th IAAF World Youth Championship Pole Vault

How good are youths when it comes to sports competitions? What are the standards that you would expect at the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games? For pole vault event, look no further that Australia's Vicky Parnov who won the 5th IAAF World Youth Championship Pole Vault event in 1997 to get an idea of how good these athletes can be.

Australia's Vicky Parnov (not in picture) was only 16 years old when she won the gold medal for pole vault at the 5th IAAF World Youth Championship in Ostrava, Czech Republic. She cleared 4.30 metres to beat off the challenge from defending champion Ekaterini Stefanidi.

Before this competition, Vicky Parnov experienced competition in the World Youth Championships in Marrakech in 2005 when she came in fourth, and the World Junior Championships in Beijing in 2006 when she came in third in the girls pole vault event. She also competed in the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne but could only manage to get into sixth position.

Parnov was born in Moscow and raised in Australia. Her family genes are heavily weighted towards sports. Her aunt Tatyana Grigorieva was the silver medallist in the 200o Olympic pole vault. Her gandmother Natalya Pechonkina was the 1968 Olympic Games 400-metre race bronze medallist. According to Australian team leaders, her twelve-year-old sister Liz apparently can clear 3.65 metres.

Let's hope more athletes like Vicky Parnov can make their way to Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games and create plenty of sports-related buzz.

Look at the runner in lane five closely.

Would there be an exciting 100 metre dash at the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games like the sprint performance of Jamaica's 18 year old Yohan Blake? Sprint sensation Yohan Blake from St Jago's High School, at only 18 years old, burnt the racing track to complete the 100 metre sprint in 10.11 second at the CARIFTA XXXVI Championship Games on 7 April 2007 at Turks & Caicos. [CARIFTA : Caribbean nations, formerly Caribbean Free Trade Agreement nations]

Would we see runners between 14 to 18 year olds from the Olympic world come to Singapore to produce amazing performances? Would the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games see more 18 year olds produce results of Yohan Blake proportions?

I certainly hope so and really look forward to the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games competitions.

Wishing To See Singapore Youths in 2010 Olympic Events At An East Coast Park Barbecue Pit

I am wondering if some of the Singapore Olympics and Games competition will be held at East Coast Beach Park near the barbecue pits. Events like beach volleyball, triathlon and sailing may see action along the barbecue-pit-rich beaches of East Coast Park in Singapore in 2010 for Youths as Olympic and Games organizers consider them worthwhile to stage.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to enjoy the outdoor space, the sun, the sand, the sea, the pit barbecued sauces plus the exciting Youth Olympics and Games sceneries along the shoreline of East Coast Park? Wouldn’t it be great if you can spend time with friends and family at such a barbecue pit along East Coast Park and yet witness youths competing in Olympic competitive games out at sea?

How often would you be able to tell your grandchildren of the occasions when you saw youths in action during Olympic games, while sampling barbecued food at a place as common as East Coast Park? How many memorable photographs of such events during the 2010 event in Singapore for youth at Olympic-level Games would you be able to amass while your chicken wing or satay is competing for a perfect tan on the sizzling barbecue pit?

Yes, this may be comical rhetoric, but it is also the dream of an ordinary Singapore. I wish to be involved as a spectator, soaking in the spectacular 2010 Youth events of Olympic spirits and Games atmosphere, appreciating every tasty moment of my barbecue involvement.

Let 2010 arrive in Singapore for Youth to participate in Olympics and Games, and of course let the flames commence.... for barbecues.

Thank you for reading my Youth Olympics blog.

What A 2010 YOG Singapore Swimming Finals Might Look Like

For a taste of what a Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games 800m swimming final competition might look like, there was video of a championship final. 18-year-old American Kate Ziegler swam her lungs out in the Fina World Swimming Championships in Melbourne in 2006 to beat Laure Manaudou of France to clock a championship record on her way to the 800-metre freestyle final.

This presentation does not imply that the Singapore's Youth Olympic and Games in 2010 will have an 800-metre Swimming Finals. Neither does it promise that such a Youth Olympics swimming Final will be as exciting. The thrilling video of a swimming final to showcase what may be installed for the future Games may not materialise. Hopefully, come August 2010, the Singapore Youth Olympics and games will produce many such exciting events.

Let’s Play To Get More Players Of Sports

The Singapore Sports Council has launched a movement “Let’s Play” to encourage more citizens to benefit from sports by participating in sports in Singapore. Senior Parliamentary Secretary (Community Development, Youth and Sports and Transport) Mr Teo Ser Luck was the guest of honour at a recent ceremony in Suntec City.

The numerous mental and physical health benefits of regular exercise from sports participation are well known. Another beneficial aspect is the emotional well being that sports participation can bring. The Singapore Sports Council hopes that more people can receive opportunities to watch sporting events and volunteer at organizing these functions.

A new website at singaporesports.sg was rolled out to allow people to check out the latest news on local sports, book sporting facilities, confirm dates on the local sports calendar, and even learn basics about eight sports like netball, badminton, football, swimming, running, table tennis, rugby and basketball. Inspiring stories by citizens on their sporting habits can be read on line too. Kids will love the online basketball game at the website and learn to be the next Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryan. You can check out the details through this link.

A laudable effort by the Singapore Sports Council, this initiative should hopefully see greater participation in sports by Singaporeans. It is a convenient one-stop resource for busy Singaporeans to play their favourite games and to entice novices to start sports play.

Do show your support by visiting the website.

Now let’s play!

Thoughts And Comments On Singapore's 2010 Youth Games and Olympic

It is still early days before the Youth Olympics and Games, but I'll like to share some of my thoughts and comments. As a citizen of the host country, it is to be expected that I should support the Singapore YOG to be held in 2010. I really do. Undoubtedly, this is a great honour and privilege to be part of a nation to organize a global Olympics for Youths. The Singapore YOG will bring the globe’s aspiring 14 to 18 year old athletes together in the spirit of friendly Youth Olympic competition. Such a Singaporean experience to get closer to the Youth Olympic and Games in the year 2010 would likely come not more than once in an ordinary citizen’s lifetime.

I have other reasons to like the 2010 Youth Olympic and Games. Participation in the Youth Games at Olympic level Competitions as a spectator can be a fun family friendly event. I plan to round up members of my family to visit Singapore Youth Games venues to cheer young Olympians in Singapore. Soaking in the atmosphere during the Singapore YOG competitions should be thrilling affairs as spectators cheer and applaud their respective national Youth Olympic athletes.

As we read about the young competitors in the coming months, my kids can broaden and deepen their interest in the Singapore in 2010 for the Youth Games in particular, and sports in general. Hopefully good role models will rise to the occasion for my children to learn and grow. The making of an Youth Olympic champion certainly will involve talent, discipline, training, endurance, mental strength and many other intangible factors. I want my children to pick up the right knowledge, attitude and values on the path to their independence.

The Singapore Youth games in 2010 will also offer many chances to discover more of life when I visit new places as I have mentioned before in my other blog Seen This Scene That here. It is always better to watch the games right at the venues, rather than “live” on TV. The intense participatory experience of watching competitions “live” on site cannot be fully televised and replicated via LCD screens.

I hope that you can join me to be a part of the Youth Olympic and Games in Singapore on 14 August 2010.

If you have any thoughts on Singapore in 2010 during the Youth Olympics, please share them in the comments.

Cheers to Singapore, in 2010 for Youth, Olympic and great Games!

Thank you.

Fans Of Summer Olympics: Youths Or Otherwise

What would you do to become a fan of the Summer Olympics Games, like the next one to be held from 8 August 2008 in Beijing? What do you think are the qualities that will define a fan of the Singapore Youth Olympic Games that will be will held in August 2010? Regardless of age, true blue fans share one thing in common, the passion do something for a cause that they believe in.
Here are the stories of three fans of the Beijing Olympics.

Case 1:
A 34 year old clerk from a Guangdong Hospital spent eight years writing and collecting correspondences from former world leaders like Kofi Annan (ex-United Nation chief), Jacques Chirac (ex-French President), Tony Blair (ex-British PM) and even Jacques Rogge (current IOC chief) to reply to his letters with words of support for the soon-to-be hosted Summer Olympics.

Case 2:
A 46 year old collector spent five years chasing after Olympic sports memorabilia to amass a stockpile of more than 400 Olympic-themed items. Along the way, he volunteered his services to plant 2008 olive trees in Olympia, the cradle of Olympism in Greece and managed to obtain the original drumsticks used in the highly-secured Torch Lighting Ceremony in Greece.

Case 3:
A 24 year-old Fine Arts graduate designed and produced a colourful 5.6-metre long dragon made of steamed buns with the help of his family clan, 50 kilograms of flour and a month of sweat. When his effort was recognized, he had to reproduce another model in an Beijing exhibition hall as the original was too fragile and heavy to transport from his hometown.

Are these acts of passion? Or are they publicity seekers? Read on to decide for yourself.

To herald the start of each new edition of the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, a torch relay is conducted to bring the first spark of fire from Olympia, Greece to the venue of the host city.

Fire was first used by the ancient Greeks who kept a flame burning on the altar of Hestia in Olympia, Greece for its divine powers during Olympic Games. The tradition of using the Olympic Flame was introduced during the 1928 Olympic Games and has since been a regular feature of subsequent editions.

This involves a series of torch bearers who pass the symbolic flame through the streets of many nations until it touches base at the host stadium. It will stay lighted throughout the games and eventually extinguished in elaborate ceremonies.

The Olympic Torch is the symbol of the Olympic Games. What does it look like? As each host nation is entitled to new torch designs to differentiate itself, there are many versions out there. Here are just some pictures that can be shared under the Creative Commons license.
